Cairngorm Pipes and Drums History

Cairngorm Pipes and Drums Name Origination

Cairngorm Highland Pipes and Drums Band gets it's name from the infamous mountain range in Scotland.
The name "Cairngorm" is a derivative of two other words, "Cairn" meaning round rocky hill or stone monument, and "Gorm" meaning colored stone.

The name Cairngorm is given to an ornamental yellow or brown quartz found in the Cairngorm mountains.

Cairngorm is a variety of smoky quartz crystal found in these mountains in Scotland. It usually has a smokey yellow-brown colour, though some specimens are a grey-brown.

Cairngorm Band History

The Band was formed in 2002 by Pipe Major John Fisher, Peggy Fisher, Greg McManus, and Bridgett (last name unavailable at present time).

From the beginning it was designed to be a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting the Gaelic Culture through performance and education.

Practices were held at Archbishop Wood High School with a mix of seasoned and beginner pipers and drummers.

Cairngorm Pipes and Drums band's first performances were:

  • Memorial Day Parade in Warminister, Pa
  • 4th of July Parade in Southampton, Pa
  • Celtic Day in Bristol, Pa
  • Bristol Day in Bristol, Pa

Some other early performances were:

  • Columbus Day Parade in Trenton
  • Children's Hospital for ABATE's Toys for Tots Motorcycle Run

As the band evolved, practices moved to Navity of Our Lord church in Warminster under Pipe Major Mark Falzini.

The band continued performing the Memorial Day Parade in Warminster and started our long relationship of performing at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund JDRF walk. We also had the honor of performing at the Willow Grove NAS, honoring the survivors of World War II.

The band continued growing both members and the set list under the direction of Pipe Major Ray Exten. Being invited to perform at the St. Patrick's Day parade at South Amboy, NJ, the band then added some Irish tunes.

One of the biggest highlights of the Cairngorm Pipe and Drum band occurred last year, 14 June 2008, when the band realized a dream by performing in Washington, DC, at:

  • World War II Memorial
  • Korean War Memorial
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Women in Military Service to America Memorial
  • US Marines Memorial
  • Iwo Jima Memorial

This was to honor all who have served, are currently serving and to those who gave all.

Since June, 2008, the band had grown musically providing a varied repertory as well as the quality of performance.
